Families are the backbone of our community, and supporting them is a top priority for our federal Liberal government. In Charlottetown and across Prince Edward Island, we are working to ensure that families have the resources they need to thrive. Here’s a look at some of the key initiatives that reflect our dedication to families:
1. Introducing the Canada Child Benefit
Since its introduction, the CCB has put more money directly into the pockets of families, helping them cover essentials like food, clothing, and childcare. In 2023, families in Prince Edward Island received over $135 million in CCB payments, benefitting more than 25,000 children across the province.
2. $10-a-Day Childcare
Thanks to the federal government’s $10-a-day childcare plan, families across PEI are saving thousands of dollars annually on childcare costs. In Charlottetown, this initiative has led to the creation of more affordable childcare spaces and eased financial pressures for working parents.
3. Canada Dental Care Plan
Oral health is family health. Since its launch, the Canada Dental Care Program has provided essential dental care for more than 3,500 individuals in Charlottetown (November 2024), including many families who previously could not afford this care.
4. Canada Summer Jobs Program
Through the Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ) program, young people in PEI gain valuable work experience while families benefit from strengthened community services. In 2024, over 300 positions were funded in Charlottetown alone, providing meaningful employment opportunities for local youth.
5. Supporting Families through Climate Action
To help families adapt to the rising costs of living, the federal government has provided Climate Action Incentive Payments, which offset energy costs for households in PEI. This initiative is especially important in Charlottetown, where families often face higher energy costs during the winter months.
6. Tax Break for Canadians
Starting December 14, 2024, we’re giving all Canadians a tax break by fully relieving the GST/HST on essentials like groceries, snacks, and kids’ clothing. This initiative will deliver meaningful savings and real relief at the register for Canadians until February 15, 2025.
7. More Housing for Families
The federal government is making significant investments to address affordable housing challenges in Charlottetown, ensuring that residents have access to safe, secure, and affordable homes. Through programs like the National Housing Strategy, the Rental Construction Financing Initiative, and the Affordable Housing Fund, millions of dollars have been directed toward creating new rental units and repairing existing homes.
Our federal Liberal government will continue working hard to ensure that families in Charlottetown and Prince Edward Island have the tools they need to succeed. Whether through direct financial support, affordable housing, better healthcare, or creating opportunities for youth, we are committed to building a brighter future for every family.
Let’s continue to make Charlottetown a place where families can flourish.
