The federal Liberal government has made significant strides in enhancing the lives of seniors across Canada, and especially in Prince Edward Island. Our commitment is to ensure that every senior has the resources and support to live a dignified, healthy, and secure life. Here are some key initiatives that highlight our dedication to seniors:
1. Increasing Old Age Security (OAS)
The Liberal government has enhanced the Old Age Security (OAS) benefit, providing a 10% increase for seniors over the age of 75. This increase means an additional $766 annually for over 3 million seniors across Canada. In 2023, OAS delivered $12 million and the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) delivered $4 million to residents of Prince Edward Island.
2. Expanding the Canada Pension Plan (CPP)
In response to the growing need for income security, the government introduced enhancements to the Canada Pension Plan (CPP). Over time, this will increase the maximum retirement benefit by up to 50%. This ensures that today’s working Canadians can enjoy greater financial security in their retirement years.
3. National Housing Strategy: Affordable Housing for Seniors
Under the National Housing Strategy, a $70-billion, 10-year plan, the government is funding affordable housing projects, including developments specifically for seniors. In Prince Edward Island, projects funded through this initiative have improved housing accessibility for low-income seniors, providing safe, comfortable, and affordable housing options close to essential services.
4. Investing in Healthcare and Long-Term Care
The Liberal government has committed $3 billion to support provinces and territories in improving long-term care. This funding aims to ensure that long-term care homes provide safe and compassionate care. Seniors in PEI benefit from this funding as it enhances care standards and training for long-term care providers. Through federal health transfers, over the next decade, we’re transferring more than a billion dollars to PEI to improve healthcare services ensuring seniors in PEI have better access to home care and mental health support, helping them stay healthier, happier, and independent for longer.
5. The Age Well at Home Initiative
This program provides grants to local organizations across Canada to offer practical support, like meal deliveries and home maintenance, that help seniors age comfortably in their own homes. Prince Edward Island organizations receiving this funding can offer seniors additional resources that promote independence and community connection.
6. Pharmacare and Affordable Medication
The Liberal government has taken steps to reduce prescription medication costs through bulk purchasing and has launched the first phase of pharmacare in Canada with a $1.5 billion dollar investment to cover the costs of contraceptives and diabetes medication. Lowering drug costs will particularly benefit seniors in Prince Edward Island, who often have higher medication needs.
7. Canada Dental Care Program
In just six months since the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) launched, nearly one million Canadians have gained access to essential dental care, supported by more than 22,300 oral health providers nationwide. Currently more than 2.7 million Canadians have been approved to receive care, including 3500 in Charlottetown, with more signing up every day.
The federal Liberal government will continue to prioritize seniors in Prince Edward Island and across Canada, ensuring that every senior can live comfortably, securely, and with respect. We’re committed to building a Canada where seniors are celebrated, supported, and empowered to thrive in every stage of their lives.
