PEI Humane Society Set to Restart Construction on New Animal Shelter
July 11, 2024

The PEI Humane Society is set to restart construction on its new animal shelter after the project was paused last fall. Thanks to a successful ongoing fundraising campaign and support from provincial and federal partners, the non-profit organization is set to see construction begin again soon.

“Our board of directors, our staff, and our partners have worked hard to see this come together and we’re excited to announce that the site is being re-opened and construction will restart in the coming weeks,” says Ashley Travis, development and communications coordinator for the shelter.

“We are pleased to see the future home of the PEI Humane Society resuming construction, and as a Province we are happy to support this initiative that will continue to ensure animals are treated properly, have the space to be cared for, and welfare remains a top priority,” said PEI’s Deputy Premier and Minister of Agriculture Bloyce Thompson.

“We are so fortunate to have dedicated community leaders and organizations like the PEI Humane Society that work every day to make our home a better place for all. The Government of Canada, through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA), is proud to support this essential social infrastructure that will meet the needs of our animals, support the well-being of our residents, and strengthen our community,” says Sean Casey, Member of Parliament for Charlottetown, on behalf of the Honourable Gudie Hutchings, Minister of Rural Economic Development and Minister responsible for ACOA.

This project will see a brand new 17,000 square foot animal shelter built on the Humane Society’s property on the Sherwood Rd. in Charlottetown. Construction began in 2023 but was paused as inflation outpaced fundraising efforts. Based on current estimates, the new shelter should open in spring/summer 2025.
